Sedimentation

Sedimentation for Industrial Wastewater Treatment

Sedimentation is the process by which heavier solids settle out of liquids, including sand, clay, enamel particles, dirt, metal hydroxides and metal residues. This physical principle is widely used in industrial wastewater treatment to separate solids from water before further treatment stages. Lamella clarifiers are particularly effective for this purpose and are used in a wide range of industrial applications to clarify wastewater.

Applications of Sedimentation

Lamella clarifiers are used in a wide range of industrial applications. They separate sludge and solids from cleaning processes, remove enamel sludge from tile manufacturing and separate metal residues from metalworking processes.

Precipitated heavy metals from acidic rinsing water, such as iron, zinc or copper hydroxides, can also be separated by sedimentation. The resulting sludge can subsequently be dewatered using a chamber filter press.

Sedimentation can also be used to separate phosphates from phosphating processes, for example in the form of calcium phosphate, iron phosphate or aluminium phosphate. Precipitated fluorides such as calcium fluoride from etching processes can likewise be separated from the wastewater by sedimentation.

Sedimentation in OKO-select Tanks

Our OKO-select tanks also use the principle of sedimentation. They are specifically designed for three-phase separation of oil, water and sludge. As the sludge settles, it accumulates in the lower section of the tank, where it can be removed separately.

This enables targeted separation of the individual phases and supports efficient use of resources and controlled operating costs within the wastewater treatment process.

Advantages of Sedimentation with OKO-tech

Sedimentation is a straightforward and cost-effective method for separating settleable solids from wastewater. By combining lamella clarifiers with OKO-select tanks, industrial wastewater can be effectively pretreated before downstream processes such as filtration or flotation.

The targeted removal of solids reduces the load on subsequent treatment stages and helps integrate sedimentation into comprehensive industrial wastewater treatment concepts.
