Wastewater pH Adjustment: Protecting the Environment and Infrastructure

Wastewater pH adjustment is an important step in industrial wastewater treatment because acidic or alkaline wastewater must often be brought into the applicable pH range before discharge. Correct pH adjustment supports compliance with discharge requirements and helps protect downstream infrastructure and receiving systems. It also creates suitable conditions for processes such as flocculation, coagulation and filtration, as pH can have a significant influence on the performance of physico-chemical treatment processes.

During this process, acidic wastewater is neutralised by adding alkaline agents such as lime milk or sodium hydroxide, while alkaline wastewater is neutralised by adding suitable acids.

Process Engineering Implementation

OKO-tech uses both continuous-flow and batch processes to adapt pH adjustment to different production conditions. In continuous-flow treatment, wastewater is treated continuously and is particularly suitable for larger wastewater volumes. Batch treatment is especially suitable for fluctuating wastewater volumes or wastewater with high pollutant concentrations.

Precise sensors continuously monitor the pH value and other relevant process parameters, while modern control systems automatically adjust the dosing of neutralising agents. This supports stable process conditions and reduces the need for constant manual intervention.

Chemical Principles and Process Control

The chemical basis of wastewater pH adjustment is the controlled neutralisation of acidic or alkaline constituents in the wastewater. The dosing of neutralising agents is controlled based on continuous pH measurement to achieve the required target range.

Integration of Wastewater pH Adjustment into Industrial Treatment Processes

Neutralisation can be used both as a pre-treatment stage for subsequent treatment processes and as a final treatment step within a process chain. Depending on the wastewater characteristics and treatment concept, controlled pH adjustment can support subsequent precipitation, flocculation, coagulation or filtration.

OKO-tech control systems automatically adjust treatment processes to changing pH conditions. This supports stable process operation and can reduce the need for manual intervention.
