Precipitation/Heavy-Metal Precipitation

Effective Heavy Metal Removal

Heavy metal precipitation is a proven treatment process for removing dissolved heavy metals from industrial wastewater. Each metal has a specific pH range in which precipitation is favoured, causing dissolved metals to form sparingly soluble metal hydroxides. The resulting solids can then be separated from the treated water through downstream processes such as sedimentation or flotation. This enables heavy metal concentrations to be reduced in accordance with the applicable treatment objectives and discharge requirements.

Metal Sulphide Precipitation for Low Residual Concentrations

Metal sulphide precipitation can be used when particularly low residual concentrations are required. Both organic and inorganic sulphides can enable effective precipitation, including in wastewater containing complexing agents. By forming sparingly soluble metal sulphides, dissolved heavy metals are converted into solid compounds that can subsequently be separated from the wastewater. This can improve process control and resource efficiency and, depending on the application, may also enable the recovery of valuable metal components.

Removal of Other Problematic Substances

In addition to heavy metals, specific precipitants can be used to target anions such as phosphate or fluoride. This allows several contaminants to be treated within an integrated treatment concept without requiring separate complex treatment processes for each substance. The result is a more comprehensive wastewater treatment approach that can also help optimise chemical consumption.

Flexibility with OKO-tech Systems

OKO-tech offers both continuous-flow and batch treatment systems for heavy metal precipitation. Continuous-flow systems enable ongoing wastewater treatment, while batch processes are particularly suitable for wastewater streams with strongly fluctuating volumes or pollutant concentrations.

Modern sensor technology and automated dosing systems enable treatment chemicals to be dosed according to process requirements. This supports stable treatment conditions and helps achieve the specified target concentrations for heavy metals.

Targeted heavy metal precipitation can reduce chemical and energy requirements depending on the treatment concept and improve the overall use of resources. By combining precipitation with suitable downstream separation processes, companies can develop treatment concepts that support compliance with applicable discharge requirements and economical operation of industrial wastewater treatment systems.
